Garfield cop who lost home to fire says support has been ‘touching and overwhelming’
GARFIELD –As a police officer, Rebecca Schmidt is accustomed to being a helper, not the person
in need of help.
But since a devastating fire last month that displaced six families, including her own,
and destroyed her home, Schmidt has been on the receiving end of an outpouring of generosity.
The police union set up a Venmo account to accept all the donations from the community.
